An Interview with MikeyTheGent

Dami: What inspired you to start making music?

MikeyTheGent: Being around it all my life. From my pops being in a jazz band, seeing how home studios work with real instrumentation, and I always had a thing with words so it was kinda inevitable.

Dami: Did your pops being in a jazz band have any influence on your sound?

MikeyTheGent: Not really, but whenever I tend to work on jazzy/chill productions, he’ll take notice when he comes in my studio.

Dami: How would you describe your sound?

MikeyTheGent: Me!!!! That’s a question I ask mfers a lot and they can never really compare me to anybody. I used to really just copy my GOATs of this music shit, but developing my own sound genuinely came by just putting my personality on records.

Dami: Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

MikeyTheGent: T.I, 50, Jay Z, Biggie when I was a shorty. Teenage years, it was a mix of a lot but Curren$y is my top GOAT.

Dami: How has your sound evolved over time?

MikeyTheGent: Beat selection, confidence behind the mic, and just trying shit with my voice for real.

Dami: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics?

MikeyTheGent: Living life for real.

Dami: You just dropped a new single titled “Walkin”, can you tell us about it?

MikeyTheGent: Just something I had in the vault. Dropping mad singles while I gear these two projects I have coming up.

Dami: What should we expect from the two projects you’ve been working on?

MikeyTheGent: Fire songs. Fire songs for every mood. Literally something for everybody.

Dami: What’s your creative process like?

MikeyTheGent: I’m always thinking of lines so I’m always putting shit in my notes, but shit man; just chillin, go through some beats. If I’m not freestyling or dancing to it instantly, go to the next beat. Once we get that, I typically go for the hook first then the verse just comes. May have some people in studio, I may be dolo but either way, the vibes definitely carries the development of the record. I don’t like forcing shit and I don’t like recording for a long ass time.

Dami: Is there a dream collab you’d love to make happen?

MikeyTheGent: Spitta 100%.

Dami: Do you plan on exploring any new styles or sounds in the future?

MikeyTheGent: I’m still building my singing skills so that’s a yes. Tapping into some light R&B for sure.

Dami: Where do you see yourself and your music five years from now?

MikeyTheGent: I see my collective LaFamiliaSound fully submerged in the entertainment industry. Trying to have a piece of the puzzle planted in as many areas as possible. For me, same ol same ol- making records, doing shows, smoking pot, just with more notoriety.

Dami: Can you tell us more about this collective.? What brought yall together?

MikeyTheGent: It’s pretty much everybody who I really started in this music shit with. It’s not many musical artists but we have somebody who’s either already involved or interested in different aspects of the entertainment industry, so no matter where they go and work, it’s a LFS stamp there and we had a part of it. It’s all family and we’re big on DIY. We’re down to collab of course but we def be on our own type of timing and I’m slowly but surely becoming a perfectionist so shit gotta be legit.

Dami: Should we expect a project from yall in the nearest future?

MikeyTheGent: As a collective, maybe sumn light but nun too serious. We act a damn fool when all of us are in studio.
